MAXXEON WorkStar® 220/224/22UV LED Penlight FAQ

Q. My WorkStar 220 Pocket Floodlight either won't turn on, or flickers. Can I fix it?
A. A small number of the Fall 2011 batch of WorkStar 220s have experienced this issue.

Temporary Solution
Unscrew the head. Insert a pair of tweezers in the two small holes in the white plastic disc and loosen the disc slightly and then tighten the disc slightly. Screw the head back on, if it doesn’t work, repeat the process. You will find a position that will work.

Permanent Solution
Unscrew the head. Insert a pair of tweezers in the two small holes in the white plastic disc and unscrew the disc. Remove the disc and the gold-plated post and then remove the round PCB. Using a small screwdriver, tighten the brass ring slightly until it puts firm pressure on the reflector. Over tightening will risk breaking the glass lens. Be careful not to un-center the alignment of the plastic washer between the reflector and the brass ring. Sometimes the plastic washer will move sideways when tightening the brass ring.

Insert the PCB and screw the white disc and gold post back in. If the gold post does not fit snugly in the hole in the white disc, then turn the disc over and using the screwdriver, press on the edge of the hole at three or four places. This will increase the friction on the post.

We apologize for this issue and steps are being taken to adjust the brass ring properly in the future.

Q. Will the LED break or wear out?
A. No, the LED (light emitting diode) is a solid state device that does not "burn out". However, LEDs do get dimmer as they age. If left on continuously, this LED will start to dim after 10 years. The LED will not break in normal use.

Q. How tough is the WorkStar 220/224/22UV?
A. Very tough — the WorkStar 220/224/22UV will survive a six foot drop onto a concrete floor.

Q. Is my WorkStar 220/224/22UV waterproof?
A. No, the WorkStar 220/224/22UV is equipped with rubber O-rings and is water resistant but should not be immersed in liquids.

MAXXEON WorkStar® 1400 LED Work Light FAQ

Q. How do I charge the WorkStar 1400?
A. To recharge the batteries:  1. Turn the WorkStar off.  2. Plug the charger into a 110 VAC outlet – the charger LED turns green.  3. Insert the charger mini plug into the WorkStar jack – the LED turns red.  4. The WorkStar recharges in less than 2 hours – when charged, the LED turns green again. Recharge at any time. Full discharge is not necessary and the WorkStar cannot be over charged.

Q. Can I leave the WorkStar 1400 on charge indefinitely?
A. Yes, but there is no advantage to leave it on after the batteries are fully charged.

Q. Will the WorkStar 1400 run while plugged in?
A. Yes, but it must be turned off to complete the full charge cycle.

Q. After I charge my WorkStar 1400 for the first time, the light is bright for a minute or two, but goes dim right away. Why?
A. There is likely a defective battery that is covered by the warranty. Contact customer service.

Q. My WorkStar 1400 sometimes doesn’t turn on immediately after charging. Why is this?
A. The WorkStar 1400 battery pack has a thermal switch to protect against overcharging. Imbalances in the battery states can cause some batteries to get warm enough at the end-of-charge to activate the switch and disconnect the battery pack. This does not affect the safety or performance of the WorkStar, but the body will feel warm and the LED will not turn on until the thermal switch resets. This may take up to 20 minutes.

Q. My WorkStar 1400 won't turn on after it has been dropped or the light is intermittent. Why?
A. First, check that the battery pack is properly charged (see above). If the light will only turn on when the charger is connected, there may be a poor connection in the battery pack. Open the red battery cover by removing the screw. Watch for the small washer on the screw between the red and yellow plastic parts. Turn the light on and rotate each battery to make sure that they are making good contact. Also, check the brass battery spacers for corrosion. If any of the spacers are corroded, remove them, clean with fine emery cloth or mild abrasive, reinstall them, and replace the battery cover and the small washer.

Q. How many times can I recharge the WorkStar 1400 batteries before they need to be replaced?
A. The batteries may start to lose capacity after about 500 full charge/discharge cycles.

Q. Can I buy replacement batteries?
A. Yes, AA, nickel-metal hydride (Ni-MH) batteries are readily available in stores. The WorkStar 1400 uses eight AA, Ni-MH batteries. Open the red battery cover by removing the screw. Watch for the small washer on the screw between the red and yellow plastic parts. Remove the batteries. Check the brass battery spacers for corrosion. If any of the spacers are corroded, remove them, clean with fine emery cloth or mild abrasive. Reinstall them when replacing the batteries. Replace the battery cover and the small washer. Replacement batteries, with a larger mAh number  than the original batteries, will increase the run time.

Q. A 12 volt car charger is not provided. How do I charge my WorkStar 1400 when I'm on the road or camping?
A. All you need is an inexpensive DC-to-AC inverter that plugs into the 12 VDC cigarette lighter/auxiliary power jack in your car, truck, RV, or boat. A unit with an output of 75 watts, 110 VAC is sufficient to recharge a WorkStar 1400.

Q. Does the WorkStar 1400's 110 VAC charger work on 230 volts?
A. No, the charger only works on 110 volts and it has a standard "Type A", two prong plug. However, you may supply your own 20 watt, 230 volt to 120 volt transformer.

Q. Will the LED break or wear out?
A. No, the LED (light emitting diode) is a solid state device that has a life of over 10 years continuous use.

Q. How tough is the WorkStar 1400?
A.
Very tough — the WorkStar 1400 will survive a six foot drop onto a concrete floor.

Q. Sometimes when using the magnets, my WorkStar 1400 slides down the metal surface. What can be done to stop it from sliding?
A. The powerful rare earth magnets on the WorkStar 1400 are sized to support the WorkStar 1400 when placed on typical metal surfaces found in cars and machinery. Rare earth magnets can easily facture and chip, so they are protected with a nickel coating. The nickel coating is very smooth and the WorkStar 1400's batteries are heavy. Some metal surfaces, like refrigerators, have a smooth plastic coating. The combination of the nickel coating and plastic coating does not provide enough friction to support the WorkStar 1400. Other metal surfaces, like some toolboxes, are not only slippery, but the steel is too thin to contain the magnetic field, so WorkStar 1400 slides down the surface. The solution is to increase the friction between the magnets and the surface. One way is to apply transparent tape to the magnets. Another is to place a piece of plastic wrap between the magnets and the surface.

Q. Is my WorkStar 1400 waterproof?
A. No, the WorkStar 1400 is water resistant, but it should not be immersed in liquids.

Q. Can my WorkStar 1400 be used in hazardous environments?
A. No, the WorkStar 1400 was not designed for hazardous environments.

Q. Can the tension on the moveable light head be adjusted?
A. Yes, you can adjust the amount of light head tilt tension by turning the hex head tilt tension adjustment screw.
